📰 News we're reading

1. 31 homes red-tagged in Malibu after sinkhole swallows Nicolas Cage's driveway (ocregister.com) — Malibu has red‑tagged 31 homes and declared a local emergency after a sinkhole at Nicolas Cage's Sea Level Drive property cut off safe access and utilities, forcing evacuations and opening a Red Cross shelter at Malibu High School. City officials say repairs to the private road could take about five weeks, while they also monitor erosion threats along Pacific Coast Highway and Westward Beach.

2. Massive sinkhole collapses driveway at Nicolas Cage's Malibu mansion and prompts evacuations (meaww.com) — A massive sinkhole at Nicolas Cage's Malibu beachfront home has triggered a local emergency, red tags, and evacuations along Sea Level Drive, with gas already shut off and water possibly next. Malibu officials warn high surf and Hurricane Marie's remnants could worsen erosion, further restrict emergency access, and threaten nearby homes, while Long Beach residents also face evacuations from pounding waves.

3. Driveway of coastal mansion owned by Nicolas Cage collapses (bostonherald.com) — In Malibu, the driveway of Nicolas Cage's oceanfront mansion collapsed into a large hole Tuesday morning, causing a gas leak and prompting SoCalGas to shut service along part of the street. City officials barred entry to five homes in the private neighborhood between the ocean and Pacific Coast Highway as lingering effects of former Hurricane Marie continue to batter the coastline.

4. Dangerous California heat wave escalates with tropical humidity (amedpost.com) — Malibu is under an extreme heat warning through Thursday as a humid, end‑of‑summer heatwave pushes coastal temperatures into the upper 80s and 90s, with inland areas topping 100 degrees. Fueled by lingering moisture from Hurricane Marie and a strong high‑pressure ridge, the tropical‑style conditions have health officials urging residents to hydrate, limit outdoor activity, and seek air‑conditioned spaces.

5. September Heat Wave Gives LA No Recovery Time After August Left 3,000 Without Power (techtimes.com) — Malibu is under National Weather Service heat warnings as a September heat wave blankets Southern California from the border to the coast, with little nighttime relief. Residents are urged to seek air-conditioned spaces, plan for possible power issues, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors as multi-day extreme temperatures strain infrastructure and health.
