On-Duty Death Of CHP Officer Draws Tributes From Local Law Enforcement

MURRIETA, CA — Law enforcement agencies across California — including the Murrieta Police Department — are mourning the loss of California Highway Patrol Motorcycle Officer Brian Liles, who died in the line of duty Monday following a traffic crash in Tulare County.

"Our hearts are with the California Highway Patrol as they mourn the line-of-duty death of Officer Brian Liles," the Murrieta Police Department said in a statement Tuesday morning. "We extend our deepest condolences to Officer Liles’ wife, children, family, friends, and his brothers and sisters of the California Highway Patrol. Thank you for your service and sacrifice, Officer Liles. Your dedication will not be forgotten."

Liles, 44, was involved in an on-duty motorcycle collision around 5:11 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, on state Route 99, just north of state Route 190 in Tipton, according to the CHP. Despite lifesaving efforts performed by emergency personnel, Liles died from his injuries at the scene.

A 16-year veteran of the state police force, Liles graduated from the CHP Academy in 2010. He served in the agency's San Jose, Hayward, and Fresno area offices before transferring to the Visalia Area office in 2019.

Liles is survived by his wife, two children, parents, and two sisters. Funeral arrangements and official memorial services have not yet been announced.

News of the fatal crash drew an outpouring of sympathy and tributes. Monday night Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statement.

“Officer Brian Liles dedicated his life to serving our communities, and his passing is a heartbreaking loss for the California Highway Patrol and the entire state of California," Newsom said. "Jennifer and I are deeply saddened by his tragic loss and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and CHP colleagues. He will be remembered for his dedication to serving and protecting the people of California.”

In honor of Officer Liles, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff.

Liles' death was the first line-of-duty loss for the CHP since 2020. On Dec. 2 of that year, CHP Officer Andy Ornelas, 27, died after being struck by a vehicle in Palmdale nine days earlier.

The state law enforcement agency said Liles will always be remembered.

"His dedication to public service and commitment to protecting the people of California will not be forgotten," the CHP said.
