📰 News we're reading

1. Dangerous Surf Hits Newport Beach Coast This Week: Advisory (patch.com) — Newport Beach residents are being warned about high surf and strong rip currents as a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through Thursday evening. Waves of three to six feet, with sets up to seven feet, could create dangerous conditions and minor coastal flooding, especially on south and southwest-facing beaches. Locals are urged to keep a safe distance from the water and remain vigilant along the shoreline.

2. Newport Beach Halts All Herbicide Treatment On Fields, City Says (patch.com) — Newport Beach is halting all synthetic herbicide use on its city-owned athletic fields and shifting to a long-term sod replacement plan, along with organic and mechanical weed control. The decision affects nearly 1.9 million square feet of turf and follows growing regional concern over pesticides after rare childhood cancer cases in nearby communities prompted calls for federal investigation. Families using local fields may notice maintenance changes as the new program rolls out.

3. Watch: Rattlesnake Slithers Past Man In Surf At Crystal Cove (patch.com) — Beachgoers in Newport Beach are buzzing after a visiting comedian shared video of a large rattlesnake gliding through the surf at Crystal Cove and slithering between his sandals on the sand. The snake eventually headed back up the cliffside without harming anyone, and wildlife experts are reminding locals to keep a safe distance from snakes they encounter along the shore.

4. Escapee Linked To Newport Beach Burglary Crew Behind Bars Again (patch.com) — A man previously convicted in a string of burglaries stretching from Ventura County to Newport Beach is back in custody after walking away from a Northern California prison camp earlier this year. His earlier case included a 2021 break-in on Antigua Way in Newport Beach, where suspects were caught after a police pursuit. The case highlights how regional burglary crews have impacted local neighborhoods and the long legal tail that follows.

5. Lifeguards save lives. California is only now recognizing them as first responders (timesofsandiego.com) — Newport Beach's own Ben Carlson, who died saving a swimmer in 2014, is a central example in California's new move to formally recognize open-water lifeguards as first responders. The resolution, inspired by lifeguards' lifesaving work from Newport Beach to San Diego and Santa Cruz, doesn't change pay or benefits yet but gives advocates new leverage to push for better protections statewide and federally.
