Officials have doubled staff, poured in extra funds, and warned beachgoers to stay extremely cautious through Labor Day weekend while lifeguards monitor powerful waves and rip currents.

COURT WATCH: Judge Releases Accused on Own Recognizance After Twin Brother Raises Possible Charge Mix-Up (davisvanguard.org) — A Newport Beach judge released a DUI defendant on their own recognizance after the man and his twin brother told the court charges may have been mixed up because they share the same first name. The judge recalled the warrant and ordered prosecutors to sort out which brother should actually face the case before any further proceedings.

5. South L.A. Man Pleads Guilty to Violent SoCal Armed Robberies and Mall Shooting (edhat.com) — A South Los Angeles man has pleaded guilty to a string of armed robberies across Southern California, including a high-end watch and wallet robbery at Newport Beach's Fashion Island and a shooting at Costa Mesa's South Coast Plaza. Newport Beach police assisted a federal-local task force that investigated the case, and the defendant now faces at least 10 years in prison.
