• Newport Beach gets emergency permit to get sand on beaches (ocregister.com) — Newport Beach has secured an emergency permit to move up to 200,000 cubic yards of sand from the Santa Ana River to its eroding shoreline, with work expected to bolster West Newport beaches by late October. City engineers are also exploring a costly dredging project to protect the Wedge and Balboa Peninsula, as recent storms have stripped away sand and threatened homes and infrastructure.

• Chaos Erupts in Newport Beach After Illegals Crash Boat (dailysignal.com) — Residents in Newport Beach saw a smuggling-style boat crash into a yacht in Newport Harbor Saturday, then watched about a dozen suspected migrants scatter into nearby neighborhoods. Local police and the Orange County Sheriff say there's no known ongoing threat, but federal agencies have taken over the vessel and are investigating, as officials link this to a rise in coastal smuggling attempts.
