📰 News we're reading

• Monterey County officials delay report on Pajaro flood money, again (santacruzlocal.org) — Pajaro residents are still waiting to learn exactly how Monterey County spent the last of $20 million in state flood-recovery aid, even though the county says all $10 million in direct assistance has been allocated. Officials have repeatedly delayed releasing a final report, after a slow, often frustrating process that left some residents and business owners feeling undercompensated for 2023 flood damage.

• Local duo honored for offensive production on the court (pajaronian.com) — A Pajaro Valley High sophomore, Alan Cervantes, has been named Offensive Player of the Year in the PCAL Santa Lucia Division after averaging 14 points and 11 rebounds and leading the Grizzlies to a runner-up finish. Alongside St. Francis senior sharpshooter Robert Gomez Jr., he headlines a long list of local basketball standouts honored across multiple Pacific Coast Athletic League divisions.

• Bay Area construction company illegally polluted river, lawsuit alleges (fresnobee.com) — Residents along the Pajaro River, including those in Pajaro, may be affected by a new lawsuit claiming a major Aromas quarry repeatedly discharged polluted water into the river without proper permits. Environmental groups say heavy metals and sediment threaten already stressed river health and fish populations, while quarry owner Graniterock disputes the allegations and points to its broader environmental efforts.
