📰 News we're reading

• Newsom signs bill requiring Riverside County Sheriff and Coroner offices to be separated (kesq.com) — Palm Desert's City Council recently opposed a new state law that forces Riverside County to separate its sheriff and coroner offices and create an independent medical examiner by 2027. While supporters say the change improves transparency in in-custody deaths, Palm Desert leaders argue an existing statewide reform should be tested first and stress preserving local control over county government structure.

• 'Learning in Retirement: Palm Desert' Celebrates 30 Years of Lifelong Learning (nbcpalmsprings.com) — Palm Desert residents 55 and older can sign up soon for Learning in Retirement's fall session, which runs November 2 through December 11 and costs $45 for up to five courses. The nonprofit, now serving more than 350 students per term, is celebrating 30 years of offering in-person and online classes that keep older adults mentally active and socially connected.
