RivCo Road Rules Promote Pedestrian Safety For All: What To Know

COACHELLA VALLEY, CA — Whether behind the wheel or crossing the street, Coachella Valley residents should maintain vigilance at all times to ensure their and others' safety, sheriff's officials said Tuesday.

September is "Pedestrian Safety Month" across California, and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said it's a good time to highlight important road rules.

"By staying focused and slowing down, especially in areas where there are more people walking, we can help prevent crashes and put safety first on every trip," Deputy Robert Smolan said. ``Everyone, regardless of how they travel, deserves to arrive at their destination safely."

In 2024, 1,090 people were fatally hit by vehicles while walking in California, accounting for about 28% of that year's traffic fatalities, according to the state Office of Traffic Safety.

Tips offered by sheriff's personnel at the Thermal station, which serves Coachella, La Quinta and surrounding communities, included the following for drivers:

-- know and follow the speed limit;

-- slow down at intersections;

-- be prepared to stop for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks;

-- never drive impaired; and

-- avoid distractions, such as using a mobile device and eating, while driving.

For pedestrians, officials underscored the following:

-- use marked crosswalks at signals where drivers anticipate foot traffic;

-- always walk on the sidewalk or facing traffic;

-- look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street;

-- consider wearing bright colors, reflective material or using a flashlight for better visibility; and

-- don't wear headphones or talk on the phone while crossing the street.
