Mountain View, CA…The Mountain View Farmers’ Market will host a pop-up this Sunday designed to provide customers with  personalized guidance and simple vegetable butchery techniques to turn their market produce into everyday meals. The Vegetable School, created by award-winning cookbook author, chef, and culinary educator Cara Mangini, will be at the Mountain View Farmers’ Market this Sunday, May 31, from 9:00am to 1:00pm

Unlike traditional cooking demos, The Vegetable School at Mountain View Farmers' Market is designed as a interactive, drop-in experience often described as “office hours with your favorite professor,” set within the farmers’ market. At the center of the program is Cara Mangini’s approach to “vegetable butchery” which teaches simple, foundational techniques that help home cooks prepare vegetables efficiently and with confidence. From breaking down a head of cauliflower to quickly stripping kale from the stem in a single motion, the focus is on practical skills that make everyday cooking easier.

Market-goers are highly encouraged to engage directly: bring a bag of produce from the market, ask what to cook that week, or learn how to handle an unfamiliar vegetable. Mangini provides real-time guidance, cooking ideas, and simple recipes tailored to what’s in season and available in the market stalls. “Most people want to cook more vegetables- they just don’t always know where to start,” said Mangini. “When you understand how to work with what’s in front of you, vegetable-centered or seasonal cooking becomes faster, easier, and a lot more enjoyable.”

Cara Mangini is widely recognized for her vegetable-forward approach to cooking. Her first cookbook, The Vegetable Butcher, received multiple International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) Cookbook Awards and a James Beard Award nomination, and has been recognized as one of the most influential vegetable cookbooks of all time. Her latest book The Vegetable Eater just won an IACP award for best single subject book of the year and is the ultimate guide for turning vegetables into seasonal meals. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, The Washington Post, Southern Living, Oprah.com, and on the Today Show.

The Vegetable School will be popping up at select Bay Area farmers’ markets this summer!  You can also take interactive, hands-on classes and sign up for more immersive vegetable education through The Vegetable School's other culinary programing and events.
