Petaluma Gun Safety Warning Renewed After Teen Brings Firearm To High School

PETALUMA, CA —After a Casa Grande High School student carried an unloaded gun onto campus, Petaluma authorities are urging residents to secure their firearms.

The City of Petaluma, Petaluma Police Department, Petaluma City Schools, and the Petaluma chapter of Moms Demand Action issued the reminder after a teen carried a gun to school in her backpack.

“We are committed to proactive safety efforts, responsible gun ownership education, and community partnerships that work towards a safer environment for all,” the organizations said in a joint statement.

Officials said firearm ownership carries serious responsibilities. California law and Petaluma regulations require gun owners to store firearms safely. Residents can obtain free gun locks at City Hall and the Police Department through a partnership with Project Child Safe.

A student was discovered Thursday with an unloaded firearm inside her backpack at Case Grande High School.

Officers arrested the teen and booked her into Juvenile Hall.

Investigators are working to determine how the student obtained the firearm and whether anyone else was involved. Police said they take every report involving a weapon on a school campus seriously.

The district did not release additional details because of student privacy protections. Police also withheld further information because the suspect is a juvenile and the investigation remains underway.
