Car Crashes Under Gravel Truck, Triggers I-680 SigAlert Tuesday

LIVERMORE, CA — A driver crashed into a gravel hauler on I-680 Tuesday morning, causing a SigAlert after gravel spilled into two lanes.

The crash occurred on southbound I-680 at around 4:51 a.m., according to CHP Officer Tyler Hahn. A driver crashed into the back of the truck, causing the rear door to open and gravel to spill.

Photos show a badly damaged car completely under the truck, and caused minor damage to the truck. The driver only suffered minor injuries, and the truck driver did not suffer any injuries.

The southbound side of I-680 was fully closed briefly while crews swept, Hahn said. A SigAlert was issued, and all lanes except the left lane were closed for a few hours.

According to a CHP post, The driver reportedly told authorities, “I was just driving along the next thing I remember is being under the trailer.”

No arrests were made, Hahn said.

In March, a car managed to wedge under a Safeway big rig. after the driver nodded off on eastbound I-580 near the Altamont Pass, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officials said that a fatigued driver was on their way home from work and admitted to dozing off while driving near North Flynn Road. The car then went under the truck, severely damaging much of the vehicle and the underside of the truck.

Despite the damage, the driver was not injured.
