Pleasanton Breaks Ground On $103M Amador Valley High School Overhaul

PLEASANTON, CA — Pleasanton officials broke ground Monday on a $102.8 million project to build a new athletic and performing arts complex at Amador Valley High School and renovate existing facilities. The new facilities will be built at the former site of the school’s 1932 theater, which was demolished earlier this month.

The new facility will contain a new performing arts theater and a new competition gymnasium. It will also feature the modernization of locker rooms serving the existing gym (which is already complete), a refinishing of the existing gymnasium floor, HVAC upgrades serving the existing gymnasiums, and other repairs.

The project was funded principally by a Measure I bond, and is expected to be complete in the second half of 2028, according to the Pleasanton Unified School District.

“This project will create exceptional new spaces for Amador students to perform, compete, learn, and come together,” AVHS Principal Malcolm Norrington said at Monday’s groundbreaking.

“We know construction of this scale requires flexibility, and I’m incredibly grateful to our students, staff, and site leaders and for continuing to keep teaching, learning and the student experience at the center throughout this transformation.”

“The Amador Theater was built nearly a century ago because this community believed in investing in young people,” said PUSD Superintendent Maurice Ghysels. “That same belief guides us today. As we begin this next chapter, we are carrying its spirit forward by creating new spaces where students can discover their voices, talents and dreams for generations to come.”
