Man seen leaving with gas can at site of Bechelli fire in Redding (redding.com) — Firefighters quickly contained a structure and grass fire on Bechelli Lane in south Redding Wednesday evening, but the vacant building was destroyed. Witnesses reported seeing a man leave the area with a gas can, and investigators are still determining the cause. Anyone who saw suspicious activity is urged to contact the Redding Fire Department.

Shasta County urges Costco grape plant buyers to report invasive pest found in Redding (krcrtv.com) — If you bought a grape plant from Costco between April 21 and May 21, especially at the Redding store, Shasta County wants to hear from you. Inspectors found an invasive glassy-winged sharpshooter on some plants, which can spread a deadly grapevine disease. Don’t move or toss the plant; instead call the Agriculture Department so they can inspect and place monitoring traps.

Erin Resner wins Shasta County supervisor seat in major shift (redding.com) — Redding Councilwoman Erin Resner has secured the Shasta County District 1 supervisor seat outright with about 54% of the vote, signaling a potential shift away from the board’s recent hard-right tilt. District 5’s race heads to a November runoff, and voters also appear to have chosen a new county clerk and registrar of voters, pending certification.

S.F. police search for mystery woman linked to OpenAI CEO home firebombing (sfchronicle.com) — Court and police records reveal that a Texas man accused of firebombing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s San Francisco home made an unexplained trip to Redding, staying at a local La Quinta just before the attack. Investigators are also seeking a mystery woman who phoned his hotel for a late checkout, suggesting a possible accomplice. Authorities say his alleged plot was driven by extreme fears about artificial intelligence.
