📰 News we're reading

• Central California man charged with hit and run, vehicular manslaughter after fatal collision (mercurynews.com) — A fatal Highway 101 crash case tied to a Kingsburg teen is now moving through San Mateo County court in Redwood City, where he faces hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter charges. Prosecutors say he allegedly fell asleep driving home from an Amazon shift, rear-ended a motorcyclist, and fled before being tracked down through his license plate and phone records.

• FDA approves landmark pancreatic cancer drug that's shown to improve survival (kpbs.org) — A newly approved pancreatic cancer pill from a Redwood City–based company has been shown to nearly double survival time for some patients with advanced disease, though it comes with a steep price tag. The drug targets common KRAS mutations long considered "undruggable," and researchers hope its success will spur more trials using similar technology for other cancers, including lung cancer.

• Dr. Aifra Ahmed: 'The human element in the physician-patient relationship is critical' (rwcpulse.com) — A local physician who once worked at Kaiser in Redwood City reflects on how COVID-era isolation and technology gaps pushed her to explore responsible uses of AI in medicine. She explains where AI can safely streamline paperwork and rare-disease research, and where human judgment, empathy, and bedside decision-making must remain central to patient care.
