Woman Dies In SMC Garage Fire, Investigation Underway: Police
Firefighters battled a blaze that killed one person and threatened neighboring structures, police said.
REDWOOD CITY, CA — A fatal structure fire in North Fair Oaks early Friday morning is currently under investigation by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office after a woman was found dead in a detached garage.
The incident began around 4:45 a.m. when Redwood City Fire Department crews and Sheriff’s deputies said they responded to a blaze on the 600 block of Hurlingame Avenue.
Arriving first responders found a detached garage heavily engulfed in flames, with the fire threatening the main house and neighboring buildings.

Firefighters said they got the fire under control in about 15 minutes. While the fire was contained to the garage, the main house did sustain smoke damage, officials said.
During the effort to extinguish the fire, crews located a victim inside the garage. The 31-year-old woman was pulled from the building, and emergency medical personnel attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police said that two other people in the home were able to escape on their own before emergency crews arrived. They were evaluated by medical personnel and were not injured. As a precaution, deputies evacuated nearby homes to ensure residents' safety and secured the scene.
Investigators from the Sheriff’s Office, including their Crime Scene Investigators and the Forensic Laboratory, are on site, along with investigators from the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office. The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office is also on the scene and will determine the official cause and manner of death.
The Sheriff’s Office stated that they have identified all occupants of the home and believe there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
The 600 block of Hurlingame Avenue is expected to remain closed to traffic throughout the day Friday as the investigation continues.
