1. $225,000 available for Sacramento nonprofits helping residents in need (sacramentocityexpress.com) — Sacramento nonprofits now have a chance to apply for $225,000 in grants from the Ann Land and Bertha Henschel Memorial Fund to support residents in need within city limits. Eligible 501(c)(3) groups based in Sacramento must apply online by 3 p.m. Sept. 30 and send a representative to the Nov. 4 commission meeting to remain eligible.
   

2. Twin Rivers formalizes opposition to crematorium near Babcock school in Sacramento (sacbee.com) — Twin Rivers Unified's board has formally opposed a proposed crematorium less than 1,000 feet from D.W. Babcock Elementary in Sacramento, responding to months of parent concerns about emissions. While the resolution doesn't control the outcome, it adds pressure as the Sacramento air district reviews environmental impacts and keeps the project's permit on hold pending a CEQA review this fall.
   

3. Sacramento High School hosts HBCU college fair, awards scholarships to students (kcra.com) — Sacramento High School just hosted a major HBCU college fair, bringing representatives from more than 30 historically Black colleges directly to local seniors. Partnering with the United College Action Network, the school helped about 100 students explore programs and even secure on-the-spot full or partial scholarships, advancing its mission to get Sacramento students to and through college.
   

4. Sacramento pet photo sessions support Front Street Animal Shelter (kcra.com) — A Sacramento pet photographer is trading free mini photo sessions for donations of dog or cat food to refill Front Street Animal Shelter's empty pet food pantry. Through the "Fill the Pantry" campaign running until month's end, residents can book a studio session by pledging a qualifying bag of food, directly helping local pets and families in need.
   

5. Sacramento-area firefighters head to Floriston Fire as multi-agency response grows (kcra.com) — Firefighters and emergency managers from Sacramento-area agencies are deploying to help run operations at the Floriston Fire near the California–Nevada line, expecting to stay at least a week. Sacramento's regional incident team will handle planning, logistics, and support so frontline crews can rotate, rest, and keep the wildfire response organized and safe.
