Sacramento top stories: Transit buses, Lavender Heights safety, CA traffic (sacbee.com) — Sacramento Regional Transit is postponing a full switch to zero-emission buses by buying 78 new compressed natural gas vehicles, a move that may require a state exemption and could affect future service planning. At the same time, recent assaults in Midtown's Lavender Heights are prompting heightened safety concerns, while statewide congestion data highlights how much time Sacramento drivers still spend stuck in traffic.
   

2. Community patrol planned after 2 women assaulted in Sacramento's Lavender Heights (kcra.com) — After two women were assaulted near Badlands in Sacramento's Lavender Heights, neighbors and LGBTQ+ leaders are organizing volunteer safety patrols to support nightlife-goers and report problems. Police are still investigating whether bias played a role, while Badlands, the Midtown Association and Councilmember Phil Pluckebaum are backing added security, lighting, and safe-space training for the district.
   

3. Join California's Grand Tasting September 11 (iheart.com) — Sacramento food and wine fans can sample dishes from more than 30 restaurants and pours from up to 30 regional wineries at the new California Grand Tasting on Friday, Sept. 11, at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center. Visit Sacramento is combining its Legends of Wine and Grand Tasting into one evening event with VIP and general admission options.
   

4. After game day shooting, Sac State says it will look to do more to ensure safety (sacbee.com) — Sacramento State is tightening its focus on game day security after two shots were fired near the football stadium's main parking structure during Saturday's home opener, where more than 18,500 fans gathered. No one was hurt, but campus police and administrators say they'll add further safety measures before the next home game on September 19 to reassure students, staff, and visitors.
   

5. Man sentenced for attempted murder of Sacramento police officer in 2021 shooting (sacbee.com) — A man has been sentenced to 30 years to life for shooting and wounding a Sacramento police officer after firing at his fleeing family in the Parkway neighborhood in 2021. Jurors convicted Joshua Jermaine Hippard of attempted murder and several firearm charges, and officials say the officer's vest and equipment likely prevented more serious injuries.
