In a city known for historic Route 66, the original McDonald’s, and the iconic Arrowhead monument on the mountain, the San Manuel Pow Wow stands as a cultural icon in its own right—now celebrating its 30th anniversary. One of Southern California’s largest and most respected Native American gatherings, the Pow Wow brings together more than 1,000 dancers and drummers from across North America for a powerful three-day exhibition of tradition, competition, and community. The free event also features bird singing, grand entry processions, intertribal dances, and 100+ Native artisan vendors, along with traditional foods and family-friendly cultural experiences. For three decades, the San Manuel Pow Wow has become a cornerstone cultural tradition and regional icon, bringing together tribal nations and the broader community to celebrate Native heritage, artistry, and identity in the Inland Empire. Each day begins with a grand entry—a stunning procession of competitors entering the arena in a powerful display of tradition, unity, and cultural pride. San Manuel welcomes all to celebrate the momentous anniversary of this celebration, 30 years in the making. The Tribe is proud to honor their heritage and tradition, while also supporting the region as one of the Top 5 employers in San Bernardino County with nearly 8,000 employees and over 20,000 jobs supported across the state. With over 80% of Yaamava’ Resort &amp; Casino’s revenue coming from outside of San Bernardino County, their work brings meaningful dollars to the community as a whole. In addition to their contributions to the local economy, San Manuel gives back to communities across the nation with over $450 million donated over the past two decades supporting education, healthcare, housing, and public safety.&nbsp; Friday, September 18 – 5 p.m. to midnight. The Inland Empire Civil War Round Table's presentation will explore The Little-Known Significance of California in the Civil War. And California’s role in the wider context of the Civil War. The discussion will examine the military, economic, and strategic importance, as well as the vast but little-recognized contributions to and impact upon the larger war efforts. Additionally, we will consider the political and military conditions in California throughout the war and those California personalities, both famous and little known, who impacted the conflict, in the larger arena and within California.&nbsp;&nbsp;Kevin Phillips is a former police lieutenant, retiring after 26 years of service. A decorated combat veteran, including two Purple Hearts, Kevin has served multiple tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, and the Balkans. Kevin possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration from National University and is currently a consultant with the VIK Consulting Group, specializing in Emergency Management and Public Safety Services. A dedicated student of history, Kevin the process of completing his first book, “Prosperity of the Nation…Treasure of the World”: California and the Civil War, which will be available in December.
Kevin is a member of the Inland Empire CWRT, Pasadena CWRT, and Orange County CWRT, the American Battlefield Trust, and the Southern California Chapter of the National Infantry Association. A resident of Riverside, California, Kevin is a proud father and doting grandfather.
