Fighter Jet Crashes, Sparks Fire At Marine Corps Air Station Miramar

SAN DIEGO, CA — A military fighter jet crashed Friday morning at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, erupting in flames and sparking a brush fire, officials said.

The Lockheed Martin F-35 went down around 10 a.m. near Miramar Road and Mitscher Way, according to the Marine Corps. The pilot ejected safely and was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, officials said.

"The pilot ejected, was transported to a local medical facility in stable condition for evaluation and treatment of non-life-threatening injuries," the Marine Corps said in a statement.

The aircraft was assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Aircraft Group 11. The Marine Corps classified the incident as a "Class A mishap," a designation typically used for accidents involving a fatality, permanent disability or major property damage.

San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded to a vegetation fire ignited by the crash.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
