Rooftop Cinema Club To Honor Dolly Parton With '9 To 5' Screening (patch.com) — San Diegans can celebrate Dolly Parton's legacy with a special rooftop screening of "9 to 5" atop the Porto Vista Hotel in Little Italy on Sept. 25. Rooftop Cinema Club will donate most net proceeds to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, supporting free books for young children while honoring the late icon's impact on music, film, and literacy.
   

2. Viola Davis To Receive Gregory Peck Award At San Diego International Film Festival (patch.com) — San Diego film lovers will see major star power as Viola Davis receives the Gregory Peck Award for Cinematic Excellence at the San Diego International Film Festival's Night of the Stars Tribute in La Jolla on Oct. 13. The festival, running Oct. 13-18, will also open with Jesse Eisenberg's new film "The Debut," adding to the city's growing cultural profile.
   

3. 12 Charged In $10M Daycare Fraud Schemes In San Diego County, Feds Say (patch.com) — San Diego County residents are accused of running sham home daycares that allegedly siphoned more than $10 million meant to help low-income local families pay for childcare. Federal investigators say the suspects registered with San Diego's Child Development Associates and YMCA programs, then submitted falsified attendance records, including days when surveillance showed no children present or when providers were outside the country.
   

4. New San Diego partnership helps single mothers with eviction prevention (10news.com) — Single mothers in San Diego County who are behind on rent can now get targeted help through a new partnership between New LVL and City Heights Community Development Corporation. The program offers up to several thousand dollars in rental assistance plus a year of wraparound services and financial literacy support, aiming to stabilize families before an eviction is ever filed.
   

5. San Diego police dog set on fire during officer-involved shooting (amedpost.com) — A violent confrontation in North Park ended with a suspect dead and a San Diego police K-9, Ryder, suffering burn injuries after being set on fire inside an adult bookstore. Three San Diego officers were also burned during the standoff, which involved a makeshift blowtorch and attempts to ignite the building, and the shooting is now under investigation by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.
