Good Samaritan Was Protecting Women On Muni Bus Before Suspect Slashed His Throat: DA

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Prosecutors on Monday filed charges against a man accused of harassing two women aboard a bus in San Francisco and stabbing a passenger who intervened.

Glenn Hopkins, 44, was charged with attempted murder, use of a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon committed against a public transit passenger and two counts of great bodily injury, according to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office.

The charges stem from the vicious attack aboard a Muni bus on Sept. 23, prosecutors said.

Hopkins was aboard a Muni bus in the city's South of Market neighborhood around 1:44 p.m. when he started harassing two women, according to authorities.

As the women yelled at Hopkins to get away and stop staring at them, prosecutors said, a man boarding the bus overheard the commotion and intervened, putting himself between Hopkins and the women, authorities said.

Hopkins appeared to be pushing past the man when the 44-year-old suddenly pulled out a box cutter and repeatedly swung it at his neck and throat, prosecutors said.

The San Francisco Standard said Hopkins managed to slash the victim, who suffered critical injuries. The victim is expected to survive, according to the the San Francisco Standard.

Hopkins, meanwhile, was taken into custody in connection with the attack nearby, prosecutors said. Hopkins is due in court Monday for arraignment. It's unclear whether he has submitted a plea as of 3:30 p.m.
