4 Arrested After Attempted San Mateo Robbery Sparks Bay Area Search: Police

The suspects switched vehicles before deputies stopped them on the interstate, police said.

SAN MATEO, CA — Four people were arrested Thursday after police tracked a vehicle linked to an attempted robbery in San Mateo across several Bay Area cities, authorities said.

Around 4 p.m., San Mateo police issued an alert for a silver Audi associated with the attempted robbery.

Officers attempted to stop the Audi as it crossed the San Mateo Bridge into Alameda County, but the driver did not pull over, authorities said.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office tracked the car to Washington Avenue and Spring Lake Drive in San Leandro.

Authorities followed the Audi from the air until it reached the area of Grand Avenue and Lake Park in Oakland, where its occupants abandoned the car and got into a waiting black Mercedes, the sheriff's office said.

Police said they continued tracking the Mercedes as deputies moved in on the ground.

Deputies said they eventually stopped the Mercedes on westbound Interstate 80 near Powell Street in Emeryville. All four occupants were taken into custody, authorities said.

Additional details about the attempted robbery and the identities of those arrested were not immediately released.
