⚠️ Fourth of July Holiday Alert: Bay Area Residents Should Be Rattlesnake Aware This Weekend
As families across the Bay Area prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July with backyard barbecues, pool parties, outdoor games, and gatherings with friends, wildlife experts are reminding residents to stay alert for an unexpected holiday visitor: rattlesnakes.
Warm summer temperatures, combined with increased outdoor activity, make Independence Day weekend one of the busiest times for encounters between people and rattlesnakes throughout Northern California.

Founder and lead rattlesnake wrangler David Allen of Got Snakes? Bay Area Snake Removal says his company has already experienced a noticeable increase in calls over the past several weeks.

“One of the biggest factors this time of year is vegetation and weed abatement,” Allen explained. “As dry grass, brush, and overgrown vegetation are cleared for wildfire prevention, wildlife—including rattlesnakes—is often displaced into nearby neighborhoods. It’s a pattern we’ve consistently observed during our 25 years serving Bay Area communities.

Many snakes are simply searching for cooler shelter, water, or prey, and residential properties often provide exactly that.
🧐Areas to Check Before Spending Time Outdoors
Before children begin playing or guests arrive, take a few moments to inspect areas where rattlesnakes may be hiding:
● Around barbecue grills
● Beneath patio furniture
● Children’s play structures and swing sets
● Under decks and porches
● Around wood piles
● Landscaping rocks and retaining walls
● Garden beds and dense shrubs
● Storage sheds and garages left open
● Pet food and water stations

Rattlesnakes rely on camouflage and often remain motionless when approached, making them difficult to spot.
😲If You Find a Rattlesnake
If you discover a rattlesnake on your property:
● Stay calm and keep a safe distance.
● Keep children and pets indoors and away from the area.
● Do not attempt to kill, capture, or move the snake yourself.
● Keep visual contact with the snake from a safe location if possible.
● Allow the snake an escape route if it chooses to leave on its own.
● Contact a qualified professional experienced in safely removing venomous snakes.

⚠️Attempting to handle a rattlesnake without the proper training and equipment dramatically increases the risk of a venomous bite.

🏡Prevention Starts at Home
Simple property maintenance can help reduce the likelihood of rattlesnakes taking up residence:
● Keep grass trimmed.
● Remove brush piles and debris.
● Seal gaps beneath sheds and decks where practical.
● Reduce rodent activity, which attracts snakes looking for food.
● Keep pets supervised, especially during the cooler morning and evening hours when snakes are often more active.
Stay Safe This Holiday Weekend

The Fourth of July should be remembered for family, friends, and celebration—not an emergency trip to the hospital.
With increased snake activity expected throughout many Bay Area communities this holiday weekend, awareness is the best defense. A quick inspection of your yard before festivities begin can help keep everyone safe.
Got Snakes? Bay Area Snake Removal provides 24-hour professional rattlesnake removal, property inspections, and snake risk assessments throughout Northern California.
