📰 News we're reading

• County Proposes Final 2026-27 Budget Revisions Without Program or Service Cuts (smcgov.org) — San Mateo County is moving ahead with final 2026-27 budget revisions that avoid cuts to local programs and services while banking on full repayment of state vehicle license fee funds. Supervisors will vote September 29 on a $6.2 billion spending plan that boosts housing, homelessness and safety‑net services, but officials warn future reductions are likely without a permanent state funding fix.

• The bioinformatics escape room where guests become genetic detectives (northeastern.edu) — Bay Area families recently packed an Open Sauce science fair in San Mateo to try a Northeastern University "bioinformatics escape room" that turned visitors into DNA‑decoding detectives. The hands‑on booth, inspired by the region's booming biotech scene, will return in October at the Bay Area Science Festival, aiming to spark local students' interest in high‑demand bioinformatics careers.

• Lots of shakeup in the Dirty 30 (on3.com) — College of San Mateo's football team tumbled from No. 1 to No. 18 in the national Dirty 30 rankings after a four‑overtime loss to Sierra College, just its third defeat in 28 games. The Bulldogs, listed as San Mateo now face a crucial road test at No. 12 Butte College this week as they try to climb back into contention.
