Santa Barbara County set to ban new onshore oil and gas drilling, and block idle wells from restarting - Santa Barbara News-Press (newspress.com) — Santa Barbara County supervisors are set to vote Tuesday on an ordinance that would ban new onshore oil and gas wells and prevent more than 1,200 idle wells from restarting in unincorporated areas. Supporters frame it as a climate and public health measure, while opponents warn of job and revenue losses, and a future phase could eventually phase out existing wells entirely.
   

2. Hancock Honors celebrates community leaders, students and community support (santamariatimes.com) — Allan Hancock College recently hosted its Hancock Honors celebration, recognizing leaders who have strengthened education, the arts, and Northern Santa Barbara County, including winemaker and philanthropist Fred Brander. Students shared powerful stories of resilience and support, while the event raised more than $240,000 to fund scholarships and programs that help local residents access affordable higher education and career training.
   

3. Land Trust identifies top 7 conserved hikes in Santa Barbara County (santamariatimes.com) — If you're looking to get outside near Santa Barbara, the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County has highlighted seven top conserved hikes across the county, from Lompoc and Guadalupe to South Coast preserves. Their early-September blog post encourages locals to explore protected trails while learning how the nonprofit works to conserve natural resources, farmland, and open space for future generations.
   

4. REACH Announces New Grant Program for Aerospace Technology (noozhawk.com) — A new Space Vandenberg Innovation Fund, run with partners including UC Santa Barbara, is offering up to $525,000 to support aerospace and space-related technologies on the Central Coast. Local students, researchers, startups, and companies can apply for grants up to $100,000, with letters of intent due Oct. 2 and full applications due Oct. 16, and awards expected in December.
