2 Drivers Die In Head-On Crash On Interstate 8 In Lakeside

LAKESIDE, CA — A head-on collision between a car and an SUV on Interstate 8 in eastern San Diego County claimed the lives of both drivers Thursday.

The crash occurred at about 11 a.m. Thursday, after an eastbound 2023 Toyota RAV4 veered across a center median onto the westbound side of the freeway near Lake Jennings Park Road in Lakeside, according to the California Highway Patrol.

There, the Toyota crashed into an oncoming 2023 Honda Accord, killing the 43-year-old man behind the wheel of the latter vehicle, CHP public-affairs Officer Jasmine Lopez said.

Paramedics took the 24-year-old driver of the SUV to Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, where he was pronounced dead.

The names of the drivers, both El Cajon residents, were withheld pending family notification.

Intoxication was not a factor in the collision, Lopez said.
