• Man arrested for intentionally starting small fires in Scotts Valley (santacruzsentinel.com) — Scotts Valley police arrested a man on arson charges after several small vegetation fires were intentionally set near Green Hills Road off northbound Highway 17, though no structures were damaged and no injuries reported. Multiple local fire agencies quickly contained about a quarter-acre of hillside fire, and investigators say community tips about a man living in a nearby tent helped lead to the arrest. 
• Noah Clarkson hopes to continue momentum from eventful summer (fresnobee.com) — A Scotts Valley High alum, midfielder Noah Clarkson, just helped Team USA win gold at Israel's Maccabiah Games and is now gearing up for his senior soccer season at Hawaii Pacific University. After years recovering from a serious ACL injury, he says he finally feels back to peak form while also pursuing a master's in marine science to fight global warming.
• Fern Ridge fire contained to single structure (losgatan.com) — Fire crews quickly contained a carport blaze in the Fern Ridge neighborhood near the Santa Cruz Mountains summit before it could spread to nearby homes or wildland. A neighbor who works in Scotts Valley rushed back after a worried call from his sister, while firefighters highlighted both the value of defensible space and the risks of over-relying on app-controlled water systems and nonfunctioning hydrants.
