• Shafter police department adds motorcycle unit to address rising traffic concerns (turnto23.com) — Shafter’s police department has just launched its first motorcycle unit to crack down on speeding and improve traffic safety as the city grows busier. Led by a veteran CHP officer, the program aims to emphasize education as well as tickets, and residents are already debating whether this is the right investment for the community.
   

• Daniel Ortega dies in rear-end crash on 7th Standard Road (newsline.com) — A 20-year-old Shafter resident, Daniel Ortega, died after his Honda Civic was rear-ended on 7th Standard Road near Poplar Avenue and pushed into oncoming traffic near Shafter. Investigators say alcohol and drugs have been ruled out, and the California Highway Patrol continues to examine what caused the deadly three-vehicle collision.
