Marlonius Jazz Orchestra To Celebrate 'Billie Holiday And The Blues' In Sierra Madre

The performance, set for next month at the Sierra Madre Playhouse, honors the celebrated singer and American blues music.

SIERRA MADRE, CA — Vocalist Mara Kaye joins bassist and composer Marlonius and the Marlonius Jazz Orchestra next month at the Sierra Madre Playhouse for a program of Billie Holiday classics and lesser-known blues songs.

Featuring imaginative arrangements, “Billie Holiday and The Blues” set for Nov. 8 honors the celebrated singer while exploring the rich history of American blues music.

Brooklyn-born Kaye brings her expressive vocals to the orchestra’s sound, led by Los Angeles-based upright bassist Marlonius, concert organizers said. Their musical partnership draws on Marlonius’s experience across jazz, classical and experimental music.

The 17-piece Marlonius Jazz Orchestra opened for Clarke and Hiromi at BroadStage in 2023. The ensemble performs original compositions alongside rediscovered works by Billy Strayhorn. Concert organizers said Strayhorn is a major influence on Marlonius’s music.

The orchestra’s forthcoming debut studio album is produced by Stanley Clarke and features vocalist Olivia Kuper Harris.
