SONOMA VALLEY, CA — Organizers unveiled a heavyweight roster of writers and thinkers as the Sonoma Valley Authors Festival returns May 1–3, filling the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa with Pulitzer Prize winners, bestselling authors, and global voices who will engage audiences in close, unscripted conversations.

Festival leaders confirmed more than 20 featured speakers, including Doris Kearns Goodwin, Rick Atkinson, Dave Barry, Colum McCann, and Andrew Ross Sorkin, anchoring what has become an literary gathering that collapses the distance between readers and writers.

Attendees can engage with authors, join small breakout sessions, and move from formal talks to informal exchanges that turn published ideas into lively debate.

On Saturday, the festival’s most visible public offering, Authors on the Plaza, will bring several headliners into the open air in downtown Sonoma, where Rick Atkinson, Colum McCann, Maria Semple, and Dave Barry will discuss their work in a free, community setting.

Atkinson brings sweeping historical authority shaped by his landmark Liberation Trilogy, widely considered the definitive account of America’s role in the Allied victory in Europe during World War II. His ongoing Revolution Trilogy—developed alongside his work with filmmaker Ken Burns—recasts the American Revolution with narrative force and granular detail.

McCann arrives with a global literary reputation built on expansive, empathetic storytelling that crosses borders and histories. His work often centers marginalized voices and moments of deep historical consequence. His newest novel, Twist, draws critical praise for its immersive prose and cinematic depiction of free diving, using undersea cables as a metaphor for the fragile, far-reaching connections that bind people and continents.

Semple adds a sharply observed comic voice shaped by a career that spans television and fiction. Her forthcoming novel, Go Gentle, has already secured a spot in Oprah’s Book Club, signaling another wide readership.

Beyond the marquee names, the three-day program stretches across disciplines and forms. Photographer and author Liza Gershman will spotlight Sonoma County’s agricultural backbone through Farm + Market: Healdsburg, while anthropologist Lauren Coyle Rosen will preview new work exploring goddess traditions. Graphic artist Craig Frazier will examine visual storytelling, and magician and mentalist Jay Alexander will blend performance with insights into perception and cognition.

Co-founders Ginny and David Freeman launched the festival in 2018. This year’s program pushes further into public access. Alongside the plaza talks, the festival is carrying the Students Day and Young Readers programs into elementary and middle schools, distributing thousands of free books, bringing authors directly into classrooms.

Festival planners also confirmed a mix of ticket tiers, with full-access passes including meals and private events, alongside lower-cost options.

The formula—tight curation, high-profile speakers, and direct audience access—continues to draw national attention as a local literary gathering where ideas move quickly from page to conversation, and where readers meet authors face-to-face rather than from the back of a crowded hall.

Authors on the Plaza is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are not required and the event is open to the public at no cost, but registration is recommended. 453 1st St., Sonoma.
