Sonoma County Adopts New Plan For Safer Walking, Biking
The plan identifies potential improvements to bike lanes, pedestrian crossings and community connections.
Sonoma County has adopted a new transportation plan to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety in unincorporated communities, replacing guidelines that have been in place since 2010.
The Board of Supervisors approved the Active Transportation Plan last week, identifying potential improvements to bike lanes, pedestrian crossings and connections between communities, according to county meeting records.
The plan will help county officials prioritize projects and pursue state, federal and other funding. Its adoption does not authorize construction or provide funding for individual improvements.

“Safe, accessible walking and biking routes are essential to healthy, connected communities,” board Chair Rebecca Hermosillo said in an announcement. “This plan reflects the priorities we’ve heard from residents and gives us a roadmap for making meaningful improvements.”
Developed by Permit Sonoma in partnership with the Sonoma County Transportation and Climate Authorities, the plan addresses safety, accessibility and connectivity for pedestrians, bicyclists and people using mobility devices.

It also updates the county's list of potential infrastructure projects and incorporates current transportation design standards.
During the planning process, county officials gathered public input through workshops, community events and surveys between 2023 and 2025. The plan also incorporates transportation plans developed by Sonoma County's nine incorporated cities.
Projects will move forward as funding, resources and required approvals become available.
Residents can review the adopted plan and proposed projects through the Sonoma County Transportation and Climate Authorities.
