• A Soquel preschool and daycare program to close in August, sparking parent concerns (ksbw.com) — Soquel Union Elementary School District will close Opal Cliffs Preschool’s daycare program in August and shift services to Santa Cruz Gardens Elementary, a move driven by declining enrollment and cost savings. Families in the Soquel area worry the new site won’t have enough space and will worsen already tough childcare and traffic challenges. Parents plan to speak out at tonight’s board meeting in New Brighton.
   

• Weather hampers early salmon season action (santacruzsentinel.com) — Salmon season is underway in the Central Management Region, and local anglers are finding the best action along the edges of the Soquel Hole, fishing deep despite rough conditions. Catches have been modest so far, but reports suggest the salmon are present and may improve if cooler, upwelled water arrives. Boaters from around the region are trailering in to fish Monterey Bay.
