📰 News we're reading

• Is reading dead? Not at the Bay Area's thriving Silent Book Clubs (mercurynews.com subscription) — South San Francisco readers can join a local Silent Book Club chapter that meets in public spaces for quiet reading and low-pressure socializing. The movement, started in San Francisco, has exploded across the Bay Area and worldwide, offering newcomers and longtime residents alike an easy way to make friends, unplug from screens, and reconnect with books.

• Famed Hot-Rod Builder Behind Cars For Rock Legends Earns SMC Honor (patch.com) — A longtime South San Francisco hot-rod builder, Roy Brizio of Roy Brizio Street Rods, has been named San Mateo County's 2026 History Maker for elevating custom car craftsmanship and bringing attention to the city. He'll be honored at the History Makers Dinner in Foster City this September, where baseball legend and friend Reggie Jackson will serve as master of ceremonies.

• Menlo Park overhauls license plate reader sharing after discovering more improper searches (paloaltoonline.com) — South San Francisco police are one of just five agencies still allowed to access Menlo Park's automated license plate reader data after a major overhaul of sharing rules. Menlo Park tightened controls following improper searches by regional and federal partners, prompting new agreements and audits that affect how local departments across San Mateo County can use shared camera data.
