Every American Deserves to Feel Safe Practicing Their Faith

Practicing one’s faith is a promise enshrined in the First Amendment and a reflection of the America we aspire to be—a nation where people of every belief can live in peace and dignity.

Every American deserves to feel safe practicing their faith. That should not be a controversial statement. It is a promise enshrined in the First Amendment and one of the defining principles of our nation. Yet for many Muslims across the United States, that promise can feel increasingly fragile.

The horrific stabbing of a Muslim man in Utah, allegedly targeted because of his religion, is a sobering reminder that Islamophobia remains a real and dangerous threat. When prejudice escalates into violence, it attacks not only the victim but also the freedoms guaranteed to every American.

This tragedy is not an isolated incident. Civil rights organizations have documented rising levels of anti-Muslim harassment, discrimination, and hate incidents in recent years. No one should fear attending Friday prayers, wearing religious attire, or simply identifying as Muslim.

Leadership matters. The tone set by elected officials—locally, statewide, and nationally—helps shape our communities. Public leaders have a duty to condemn violence and hatred consistently, regardless of who the victim is or what faith they practice. Silence, selective outrage, or rhetoric that fuels division only weakens the values we claim to uphold.

America’s commitment to religious liberty extends to everyone and creating a kinder America is not the responsibility of leaders alone. Whether one worships in a mosque, church, synagogue, temple, or nowhere at all, every person deserves to live free from intimidation and violence because of their beliefs.

Defending the rights and safety of Muslim Americans is not about special treatment—it is about preserving the constitutional freedoms that belong equally to every citizen.

Our nation is strongest when we reject bigotry in all its forms and stand united in defense of one another’s rights. That is the America our Constitution envisions, and it is the America we must continue striving to build.
