Ukiah Unified School District March students of the month (ukiahdailyjournal.com) — Ukiah Unified is celebrating 51 March Students of the Month from 11 local schools, honored at a ceremony at Ukiah High School on April 7. Grace Hudson Elementary earned best attendance and Nokomis Elementary most improved, with every Ukiah Unified campus showing gains. Families can watch the full celebration on the district’s YouTube channel and see which students were recognized.
   

2. DA files criminal charge against teacher Matt LaFever (advocate-news.com) — Ukiah residents should know that a former Ukiah High School journalism teacher has been charged with a misdemeanor involving alleged inappropriate communication with a 17-year-old, and he remains on unpaid leave from Ukiah Unified. Police say they seized his devices after a parent complaint and student interviews, and prosecutors confirm the case is now moving forward in court.
   

3. Probationer arrested in Ukiah after bear spray, another person's wallet allegedly found in his possession • The Mendocino Voice (mendovoice.com) — Deputies arrested a man on probation at a Talmage Road motel in Ukiah after allegedly finding bear spray, knives, cannabis, and a wallet belonging to someone else. Authorities say the items violated his probation terms, and he is currently being held in jail without bail on multiple suspicion charges.
   

4. McNear: Mendocino's Russell Kelley was bright and charming but suffered from ill health • The Mendocino Voice (mendovoice.com) — A 19th-century Mendocino resident, Russell Blair Kelley, repeatedly visited hot springs in Ukiah seeking relief from chronic health problems, even surviving a near-drowning while riding from Ukiah Springs back to the coast. The story traces his schooling, travels, community organizing, and early death at 23, painting a vivid picture of regional life in that era.
