• Union City police seek public's help in finding hit-and-run suspect (eastbaytimes.com) — Union City police are asking residents for any information or video that might help identify a hit-and-run driver who struck a 15-year-old boy at Regents Boulevard and Kenwood Street on Sept. 28, breaking his hip. Investigators believe the suspect drove a newer Honda CR-V seen heading west on Kenwood and urge anyone with tips to call Officer Ivan Toscano or the department's tip line.
   

• Judge denies request by Oakland Catholic diocese to green-light contentious payout to abuse victims (timesheraldonline.com) — A federal judge has rejected the Oakland Catholic diocese's proposed bankruptcy exit plan, sending church officials back to negotiations with hundreds of abuse survivors, including a former Union City altar boy previously awarded $16 million. The judge criticized the plan as unfairly tilted toward the diocese and questioned its accounting of assets, while upcoming bellwether trials and broader California settlements keep pressure on church leaders to offer more substantial compensation and reforms.
