📰 News we're reading

• City attorney: Opening upvalley bus lanes would require voter approval (aspendailynews.com) — If Aspen ever wants to let regular cars use the upvalley bus-only lanes between the Maroon Creek roundabout and Buttermilk, voters would have to sign off first, the city attorney says. Her memo explains that Aspen’s charter, past easement votes, RFTA’s federal obligations, and EOTC funding restrictions all tightly limit how those Highway 82 lanes can be used to address congestion.

• Roaring Fork Valley is ‘better prepared than we've ever been' for wildfire (aspentimes.com) — Aspen fire officials say the Roaring Fork Valley is better prepared than ever for a potentially dangerous wildfire season, with new modeling tools being used to assess risks in Aspen neighborhoods. Local agencies are coordinating home-hardening efforts, high-tech smoke detection, strategic staging of crews, and updated evacuation planning with Aspen police to protect residents if fires break out this summer.

• Law enforcement from Aspen to Silt considers changes to street-camera surveillance in response to immigration concerns (aspenjournalism.org) — Police agencies from Aspen to Silt are rethinking how they use and share license-plate camera data, especially around immigration enforcement and privacy. Aspen Police plan to install their first Flock cameras later this year while reviewing policy and public feedback, as Pitkin County and Snowmass Village tighten data-sharing with federal immigration agencies amid a proposed statewide law adding new guardrails.
