📰 News we're reading

1. Boulder County Commits $11.2M to San Lazaro Residents to Purchase Mobile Home Park (longmontleader.com) — Boulder County has pledged $11.2 million from its affordable housing tax to help San Lazaro residents try to buy their mobile home park and keep it affordable in a high-cost area. Residents have raised donations and are pursuing a major loan but still must close a sizable funding gap by December. Commissioners say the move reflects voters' priorities around preserving local affordable housing.

2. On Track to Fix Structural Budget Deficit (bouldercounty.gov) — Boulder County leaders are proposing $13.2 million in ongoing budget cuts, including up to 36 position eliminations, to fix a structural deficit without draining reserves. Residents can weigh in at an Oct. 22 hybrid public hearing or via an online feedback form, as commissioners finalize the 2027 budget that shapes local services, staffing, and county priorities.

3. Boulder Valley School District parents sue over school closures, challenging how the plan took shape (boulderreportinglab.org) — Parents from Douglass, Flatirons and Mesa elementary schools are suing the Boulder Valley School District, claiming the board approved its Resilient Schools closure plan without the public transparency required by Colorado's Open Meetings Law. The plan would close four elementaries, reassign students across multiple campuses, and reshape grade configurations starting fall 2027, while families seek a court order to pause those changes.

4. Boulder parks board sends rare rebuke over service cuts, Spruce Pool's uncertain future (boulderreportinglab.org) — Boulder's Parks and Recreation Advisory Board has taken the unusual step of opposing the city manager's 2027 budget, warning that cuts could end free rec access for low-income residents and close Spruce Pool after 2027. One-time funding keeps the Whittier neighborhood pool open next year, but no long-term money is identified as the city faces a projected $6.3 million general fund shortfall. The debate now shifts to City Council, which votes on final approval Oct. 15.

5. Colorado Families Can Claim up to $4,473 per Child by Nov. 16 (bouldercounty.gov) — Boulder County Human Services is urging eligible families to use the free SimpleFile tool by Nov. 16 to claim up to $4,473 per young child in Colorado tax credits. Even households with little or no income, or those using ITINs, may qualify without affecting most public benefits. Local staff emphasize how this money can help Boulder County families cover essentials like food, housing, and childcare.
