📰 News we're reading

1. Durango lifts Stage 1 water restrictions (durangoherald.com) — Durango residents can now return to normal water use after the city lifted Stage 1 restrictions Tuesday evening, thanks to recent rainfall easing drought conditions. Lawn watering rules revert to regular hours and conservation remains encouraged, especially for commercial users, as drought levels across La Plata County are still classified from abnormally dry to severe.

2. Colorado Judicial Districts to host free legal resource day events in October (pagosasun.com) — Residents in Durango can get free, in-person legal help at La Plata County Combined Courts on October 28, with volunteer attorneys covering family, civil, and probate issues. Sessions run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., include Spanish interpretation, and may require advance registration, giving self-represented community members a chance to prepare confidently for court.

3. Festival ram gets loose, takes stroll through Durango on Saturday (durangoherald.com) — A runaway ram from the Mountain and Valley Fiber Arts Festival gave Durango residents an unusual show Saturday, trotting down Main Avenue and near the downtown Durango sign before police and the owners corralled it. Officers eventually used a Taser to safely stop the animal after it repeatedly entered traffic and even neared the Durango & Silverton tracks as a train approached.

4. Wildlife on the move: Colorado State Patrol sees annual increases in wildlife crashes (pagosasun.com) — Drivers in and around Durango face some of Colorado's highest wildlife-collision risks, especially along U.S. 160 and U.S. 550 during the busy October–December migration and mating season. State Patrol data show crashes rising yearly, and troopers urge slower speeds, careful scanning, and avoiding swerves to reduce damage and protect both people and animals.

5. Hurricane Polo Brought Relief To Colorado's Rivers and Reservoirs (kool1079.com) — Durango saw 6.2 inches of rain in September—triple its normal amount—helping boost the Animas River and nearby Vallecito Reservoir after a brutal drought year. Moisture from Hurricane Polo and other storms lifted fishing restrictions in parts of Southwest Colorado, though areas like Grand Junction still lag far behind average precipitation.
