📰 News we're reading

• Wildlife collision prevention act passes in senate (gunnisontimes.com) — Ouray County is highlighted as one of the Colorado areas already using wildlife crossings as the state Senate advances a Wildlife Collision Prevention Act to fund more of them. The bill would add an optional $5 fee to vehicle registrations starting in 2027, supporting projects that can cut wildlife-vehicle crashes by over 90%. Gunnison’s high deer-collision stretch underscores why more crossings are being pushed statewide.

• How Colorado rafting outfitters plan to operate during extreme drought (macon.com) — Rafting conditions on rivers near Ouray, including the Uncompahgre, will likely be lower and warmer than usual this summer because of record-low snowpack and ongoing drought. Outfitters across Colorado are planning smaller boats, inflatable kayaks, and other adjustments to keep trips running safely. Anglers may also see changes in trout behavior as streamflows drop and temperatures rise.

• Too hot to handle? Study explores how heat is reshaping US population shifts (eurekalert.org) — Ouray County is singled out among the Colorado counties experiencing some of the nation’s strongest recent warming, with temperatures rising more than 2.6°F above the 20th-century baseline. A new study finds that, so far, this kind of heat is slowing in-migration more than driving people away, suggesting Ouray may face gradual, subtle population and planning pressures rather than sudden climate flight.
