AVON, CT — Avon High School is seeking additional local businesses and organizations to participate in its student internship program after 46 students gained hands-on career experience through the initiative last summer.

The school's Achieve Internship Program, now entering its 12th year, provides rising juniors and seniors with 60-hour, unpaid internships designed to introduce them to potential careers and professional workplaces.

During the summer of 2026, 46 students completed internships spanning more than 10 career fields, working alongside professionals and mentors in the community, according to Avon Public Schools.

District officials announced Oct. 21 they are looking to expand the program by recruiting additional businesses, nonprofits, government agencies, healthcare providers, and other employers willing to host student interns.

"The Achieve Internship Program gives our students an opportunity to develop their communication, collaboration, critical and creative thinking skills while becoming more independent and adaptable," Avon High School Principal Kristina Wallace said in a statement. "These experiences help prepare our students for an ever-changing world."

The program is intended to help students explore career interests, gain workplace experience and develop skills that will benefit them after graduation.

Avon Superintendent of Schools Bridget Carnemolla said partnerships with local employers are essential to providing those opportunities.

"Our community partners are what make these opportunities possible," Carnemolla said. "When a local business or organization opens its doors to an Avon student, it is doing much more than providing an internship. It is giving a young person the opportunity to discover a career, build confidence, and begin to see what their future might look like. We would love to see even more members of our business and professional community become part of this program."

Internship Coordinator Maria Mascoli said the district hopes to increase both the number and variety of internship placements available to students during the coming year.

"We are incredibly grateful to the businesses and organizations that have supported our students over the years," Mascoli said. "As the program continues to grow, we are looking for additional partners who are willing to mentor our students and introduce them to careers and industries they may otherwise never have an opportunity to experience."

The district is encouraging employers from a wide range of industries to consider participating, providing students with opportunities to learn about careers they might not otherwise encounter.
