Avon Pet Food Company Recalls Dog Food After 3 Dogs Fall Ill

AVON, CT — An Avon-based pet food company is voluntarily recalling hundreds of bags of frozen raw dog food after testing found Salmonella, with three dog illnesses reported in Connection with the product, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Oma's Pride, located at 308 Arch Road, Avon, said it is recalling one lot of its Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe sold in 6-pound bags.

The affected product is identified as Lot BB012729, according to an updated company announcement published by the FDA.

A total of 639 bags are affected.

The recall began after the FDA received a consumer complaint and subsequently collected and tested a sample of the product.

The sample tested positive for Salmonella, according to the announcement.

Three illnesses in dogs have been reported in association with the complaint.

The company clarified in an Aug. 17 update that no human illnesses have been reported.

Oma's Pride said it is investigating the source and cause of the contamination.

How To Identify The Recalled Dog Food

The recalled product is frozen raw dog food packaged in a 6-pound stand-up pouch containing 12 individually wrapped, 8-ounce vacuum-sealed portions.

Consumers should check for the following information:

• Best-by date: Jan. 27, 2029

• Distribution dates: Feb. 12 through May 15, 2026

No other Oma's Pride products, sizes, or lots are included in the recall, according to the company.

The affected dog food was distributed to retail and wholesale accounts in Arizona, California, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

It was also shipped frozen directly to consumers through online orders.

What Consumers Should Do

Consumers who have the recalled food should stop feeding it to their pets immediately and safely dispose of it, according to the company.

The recalled food should not be sold or donated.

Oma's Pride also advised consumers to wash and sanitize pet food bowls, cups, and storage containers and thoroughly wash their hands after handling the recalled food or anything that came into contact with it.

Pets infected with Salmonella can experience lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain.

The FDA said pet owners should contact a veterinarian if an animal consumed the recalled food and develops symptoms.

Salmonella can also pose a risk to people who handle contaminated pet food, particularly if they do not thoroughly wash their hands afterward.

The voluntary recall is being conducted in coordination with the FDA.
