Farmington Valley Activists Plan Avon Protest Following Recent ICE Killings

AVON, CT — A local grassroots political organization is planning a demonstration in Avon this week in response to recent fatal shootings involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Indivisible Farmington Valley will hold a "Rapid Response Protest" from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 16, next to Avon Congregational Church near the intersection of Route 44 and Route 10.

The group's promotional materials describe the event as "No More ICE Killings" and state it is being held "in solidarity with Houston and Biddeford."

Organizers are encouraging participants to bring anti-ICE signs, water, and hats.

The protest follows two recent fatal shootings involving ICE agents.

On Monday, July 14, an ICE agent fatally shot a motorist in Biddeford, Maine.

The incident marked the second fatal shooting involving an ICE agent in about a week, following a separate deadly shooting in Houston, Texas.

The AP reported that at least nine people have died during ICE enforcement actions since President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown began.

Indivisible Farmington Valley describes itself as a grassroots political organization that advocates for issues including freedom, compassion, and justice.

The group regularly organizes community discussions, voter engagement activities, and peaceful demonstrations throughout the Farmington Valley.

No road closures or traffic advisories related to Thursday's demonstration had been announced as of Tuesday.

This comes after a prominent West Hartford restaurateur from the former Yugoslavia was whisked away by ICE agents and kept in custody for several days before being released.
