AVON, CT — The Avon Historical Society will temporarily close the historic 1865 Pine Grove Schoolhouse this summer for an interior repainting project as part of the nation's 250th anniversary commemoration.

The one-room schoolhouse, which was restored by the Avon Historical Society for the 1976 U.S. Bicentennial, has welcomed visitors for nearly five decades.

The upcoming project is intended to continue those preservation efforts as the country prepares to mark the Semiquincentennial.

The restoration is being supported through a partnership with Thomas Mach Interiors of Simsbury, which is donating paint, consultation, and project management services.

Additional funding comes from private donors and proceeds from the Historical Society's 2026 TABLESCAPES fundraiser.

Painting is expected to begin in late July or early August and take about 10 days to complete.

The schoolhouse will be closed to visitors throughout July and August and is scheduled to reopen on Sunday, Sept. 6.

The Avon Historical Society also plans a grand reopening celebration on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The event will include presentations on the building's restoration, family activities, giveaways, photography, and the reopening of a time capsule sealed during the school's 1976 restoration.

The capsule will be updated with new items before being resealed to remain closed until 2076.
