Berlin Police K9 Seriously Ill; Donations Sought For Medical Expenses

The beloved police dog is battling a serious infection and may need surgery. West Hartford Animal Control is seeking donations for his care.

BERLIN, CT — A Berlin police dog is battling a serious infection that could require surgery, prompting West Hartford Animal Control to ask the public for help covering his medical expenses.

K9 Ryker, who works alongside Berlin Police Officer Aimee Krzykowski, developed a serious infection shortly after beginning his law enforcement career, according to a social media post from West Hartford Animal Control.

Krzykowski recently bid adieu to working with her longtime K-9 partner Casner, who retired in August.

Despite aggressive medical treatment, Ryker's condition has worsened, and he may require surgery, officials said.

The Berlin Police Department's K9 Unit is funded entirely through donations, according to West Hartford Animal Control, which is encouraging residents to contribute toward Ryker's veterinary expenses.

"K9 Ryker has barely begun his journey of protecting and serving when a serious infection put his future on hold," West Hartford Animal Control wrote.

The agency expressed support for Krzykowski and her police dog as he undergoes treatment.

"These incredible dogs dedicate their lives to protecting us. Now it's our turn to protect one of them," the agency wrote.

West Hartford Animal Control is also encouraging residents to share information about the fundraising effort.

"Ryker deserves the chance to heal, return to his partner, and begin the life of service that awaits him," the agency wrote.

Residents interested in helping can donate directly through Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine in North Haven by calling 203-865-0878 and specifying that their contribution is for K-9 Ryker.
