BERLIN, CT — There's a new scam in town, and local officials are warning residents to take notice.
The Berlin Planning and Zoning Commission and Berlin Zoning Board of Appeals are warning residents and applicants about a nationwide scam targeting individuals involved in land use applications.
Town officials said scammers have been contacting applicants and requesting large wire transfer payments for application fees.

The requests are fraudulent and not associated with the town.
Officials urged anyone who receives a suspicious message not to respond and to report it immediately to town staff.

The planning and zoning department emphasized that all legitimate application fee payments must be made directly to the department by check or cash, payable to the Town of Berlin. Wire transfers are not accepted.
