Canton Event Tonight To Support Fight Against Animal Cruelty
Desmond's Army will hold a Canton fundraiser Tuesday to support its work on animal cruelty cases across Connecticut.
CANTON, CT — A Connecticut animal advocacy organization will hold a fundraiser Tuesday evening in Canton to support its work involving animal cruelty cases across the state.
Desmond’s Army Animal Law Advocates will hold its annual "Raising Dough" fundraiser from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at American Flatbread, 110 Albany Turnpike. A portion of flatbread sales during the event will benefit the nonprofit organization.
Desmond’s Army said proceeds will help pay veterinary expenses for abused animals, necropsies used in investigations, and boarding costs for pets belonging to domestic violence victims entering safe facilities. Money raised will also support the organization's reward fund.

The organization said it has offered several $5,000 rewards this summer for information leading to arrests in animal abandonment cases, including cases involving a 13-week-old puppy found in an East Windsor dumpster and a young Dalmatian abandoned in Shelton.
"Every flatbread enjoyed tonight directly fuels our presence in the courtroom and our ability to hold abusers accountable," Desmond’s Army President Zilla Cannamela said. "Whether we are funding necropsies to provide crucial evidence or educating the public about the undeniable link between animal abuse and domestic violence, community support at events like this makes our mission possible."

Desmond’s Army is a registered nonprofit whose advocates attend animal cruelty court proceedings in Connecticut. The organization was involved in efforts to pass "Desmond's Law," a Connecticut law allowing courts to appoint advocates in certain animal cruelty cases.
Tuesday's fundraiser will also feature raffle baskets and a plush pet adoption activity. Desmond’s Army members will be available to discuss the organization's work, pending legislative efforts, and ways residents can become involved.
