Canton PD Urges Caution As Heat and Humidity Grip Region

Canton police are reminding residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and check on neighbors during extreme heat.

CANTON, CT — The Canton Police Department is urging residents to take precautions as dangerous heat and humidity are expected to push heat index values into the upper 90s and above 100 degrees this week.

Temperatures this week and through the holiday weekend are expected to approach or exceed 100 on some days, with heat indexes greater than 110 possible.

In a public safety reminder, police warned that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses, particularly among young children, older adults, people with underlying medical conditions, and pets.

Officials encouraged residents to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day while limiting alcohol and caffeinated beverages, which can contribute to dehydration.

Police also recommend scheduling strenuous outdoor work or exercise during the early morning or evening hours, seeking shade or air-conditioned spaces during the hottest parts of the day, and checking on elderly neighbors, family members, and others who may be especially vulnerable to the heat.

The department reminded residents never to leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle, noting that temperatures inside a vehicle can become life-threatening within minutes, even with the windows partially open.

Police also highlighted the warning signs of heat-related illnesses.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, dizziness, weakness, and nausea. Heat stroke, which is a medical emergency, may cause a high body temperature, confusion or altered mental status, fainting, and hot, dry skin or the absence of sweating.

Anyone suspected of experiencing heat stroke should receive immediate medical attention by calling 911, police said.

"By taking a few simple precautions, we can help keep our community safe during this period of extreme heat," the department said. "Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Stay safe."
