Street Closure, Traffic Delays Planned For Canton Water Main Project

CANTON, CT — Motorists traveling through downtown Collinsville should prepare for several weeks of traffic changes beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8, as Connecticut Water launches a water main replacement project on Main Street.

The work will be completed in three phases, with lane restrictions and road closures beginning Sept. 8 and continuing for several weeks, according to the Town of Canton.

Businesses along Main Street will remain open and accessible throughout the project.

Canton police will be on site to direct traffic, and motorists are encouraged to use River Street as an alternate route.

The three phases are:

• Phase 1 — Sept. 8: Work will begin at 7 a.m. at the intersection of Main and Front streets. One lane will remain open with alternating traffic. The phase is expected to take four days, with both lanes reopening at the end of each workday.
• Phase 2 — Sept. 11: Main Street will close to motorists between Bridge Street and the gravel parking lot at the Historical Society beginning at 7 a.m. The road is expected to reopen around 4 p.m. The Canton Town Hall parking lot will also be closed during the work and is expected to reopen later that afternoon. The gravel parking area on Main Street will remain accessible to motorists entering downtown from River Street.
• Phase 3 — Sept. 14: Main Street will close between the entrance to the Canton Historical Society gravel parking lot and an area just beyond the Front Street intersection beginning at 7 a.m. The road is expected to reopen around 4 p.m. each day, with the daily closures continuing until the project is finished. This phase is expected to take three to four weeks. The Canton Town Hall parking lot will remain open during this portion of the project.

Officials said Main Street will reopen to vehicle traffic at the end of each workday during the third phase.

The town is advising drivers to use River Street to reach Main Street and avoid delays during construction.
