Obituary: Anne Montgomery (Porto Funeral Homes)

Porto Funeral Homes (East Haven/West Haven)

Anne Montgomery, a devout Roman Catholic woman of great humility, grace, and charity received her angels wings under shadow of the moon on the night of February 19, 2026. Anne, a first generation Irish American was born on Feb.4, 1926 in New Haven, CT and achieved that rare milestone, celebrating her 100th birthday two weeks ago surrounded by family and staff at the Branford Hills Healthcare facility where she was a longtime resident.

She was brought into this world by two loving parents, both Irish immigrants, Ellen “Nell” Mckenna Montgomery of Castlemaine, Co. Kerry Ireland and Alexander Montgomery of Howth, Co. Dublin, Ireland. Her siblings, were many… Joseph, Jack, Alexander, Stephen, and Larry all of whom predeceased her, along with her parents. She is survived by her beloved remaining sibling, Eileen Montgomery and countless nieces, nephews and cousins across the continental United States and in Ireland. Anne had long careers in two well-known area companies, Winchester Repeating Arms in New Haven and Nationwide Insurance in Hamden and following her retirement she volunteered for 15 years at The New Haven Historical Society. She was an active communicant and participant at St. Mary’s Church on Hillhouse Avenue in New Haven her entire life where she faithfully participated in weekly Mass cherishing her friendships with parishioners, priests, and Yale Divinity School Students. She took great comfort in the Mass, the spiritual rituals of the Catholic Church at Advent and the Easter season and living acts of kindness on a daily basis. During the course of her lifetime, she cultivated lasting friendships with childhood friends from New Haven, co-workers, neighbors at Davenport-Putnam and family through a continual stream of telephone calls, cards and shared trips. The family would like to extend their gratitude for exceptional compassionate care of Connecticut Hospice, the dedicated long-term care of the staff at Ark Healthcare and Rehabilitation at Branford Hills, and the constant loving companionship, advocacy and support of cousins Peggy and Aimee.

Her funeral procession will leave the PORTO FUNERAL HOME, 234 Foxon Rd. (Rte. 80), East Haven THURSDAY MORNING at 9:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Blessed Michael McGivney Parish at St. Mary’s Church, 5 Hillhouse Ave., New Haven at 10:00.
